The power to label chromosomes
I have worked with fluorecence in situ hybridisation (FISH) for many years. I was the first to apply the method to plant chromosomes (Schwarzacher et al. (1989). Annals of Botany 64(3): 315-3241989) and have exploited its power to resolve evolutionary dynamics in chromosome divergence ever since (e.g. Renny-Byfield et al. (2012). Independent, rapid and targeted loss of highly repetitive DNA in natural and synthetic allopolyploids of Nicotiana tabacum. PloS one 7(5): e36963; Becher et al. 2014. Endogenous pararetrovirus sequences associated with 24 nt small RNAs at the centromeres of Fritillaria imperialis L. (Liliaceae), a species with a giant genome. Plant Journal doi: 10.1111/tpj.12673.).
